The Negotiation
The Negotiation

I received a call from the I.R.S.
They informed me that I owed them money.
A phone call? I thought. This seems quite funny
but they sounded sincere, I confess.

"You need to send three thousand now," they said,
"Any delays will increase the amount.
We'll put liens on your house and savings account."
Their persuasive threats filled me with dread.

"Okay," I relented, "Send me the bill."
"No! This can't wait, you're way past the due date.
Wire it and you'll get a discount rate."
A chance to save money gave me a thrill.

"How much?" I said with a smile on my face.
Silence. "One thousand?" which sounded just great.
See what you can accomplish if you negotiate?
All of my worries just seem out place!

Now that it's all past, my fear's in recess.
I wonder why his English was so bad.
Outsourcing our tax jobs seems to me sad.
Trump's trying to balance the budget, I guess.
