December the sixth – A Good Start for Scriptwriting
A Good Start for Scriptwriting

It was very busy my first day at work for this week. If I would have stayed with my plan to finish my WDC Short Story like I originally planned to do until I got it finished, I would have only gotten another five hundred words done yesterday. That’s if I got that many words done. It was that busy at work yesterday.

What does that mean for what I did do at work yesterday? I started working on my Treasure Finders scriptwriting project. The first thing that I did was write a brief synopsis of the movie and the first two episodes of the series. Then I started working on the individual Acts for them.

So, what do I mean by ‘individual Acts?’ I mean that I came up with a few words or a sentence about what that Act is all about. Then I wrote individual words or sentences for the two main characters for this movie and series. That only took me a couple of hours to do.

Once I finished that part of my Treasure Finders scriptwriting project, I started in on my breakdown for my individual scenes for each Act of my movie and television series. I did that by creating an Excel worksheet. Now comes the hard part: figuring out what the order for those scenes will be.

I’m still working on that. In fact, I have continued working on it after I got home from work. I think that I have it worked out, but I’m not so sure about that. Don’t like how it has turned out. I’m thinking that I still have some more work to do on it before I get to the next phase of it.

What is the next phase? It’s when I write my Outline and then my Treatment for this movie and the first two episodes for this series. True, I can already to the Outlines for this movie and episodes with the information I already have, but I like to have it all ready to go before I start working on them.

I know this sound like a lot to do just for one movie, but that’s how I write them. I’m a strong believer in Outlines and Treatments. It makes it a lot easier to write the scripts if you write them first. At least it is for me. Some writers can do it without them. I’m just not one of them.

When it comes to creating a television series, there is no excuse. You do need them. It’s called a Bible. Some might say that you don’t need a Treatment, but I think that you do. At least you do for the first two or three episodes. No one in the industry will even consider it without them both.
