Memorial Day
A day often spent with family
consuming beer, brats and wine
Kids adorned in red, white and blue
Waving flags for an unremembered purpose
People walking free admiring parks and trees
Unfamiliar with the history of freedom's reason
Enjoying tournaments of lawn games and water sports
Without acknowledgement of the bloody past
Battling the fiery sun and nipping mosquitoes
While ignoring the many battles that came before
Ever on the run in search for the day of outdoor fun
Passing by the cemetery with no glance or care
Taking for granted a soldier' s gift
Remember always the call that they answered
The liberty they assured and the lives they laid down
So that we could be free
