a descent into poetry insanity

insomnia
didn't sleep last night,
staring with unsleep-dry eyes
until nine am at which point,
I slept until four.

we lose long hours with sleep.
hours that could be spent
reading one last chapter
or puttering around the house
or staring at the ceiling,
counting revolutions of the fan.

thought about giving up sleep
for lent, then remembered, easter
is over and I'm not Catholic
and sleep
isn't something to give up.

that way lies hallucinations.
wonder if the dog
that started barking last week
two doors down, is a hallucination.
I've never heard it before.
probably not.

wonder if
I'll sleep
tonight.
