Saturday Matinee
There was a time
when I gave my heart
to dashing bon vivants in black and white
top hat and tails, impeccably mannered
with a ready repartee, they
were bright stars whose light
too often
had already burned out

There was a time
when I lived each chapter
of some Dickensian plot in twists and turns
tragedy and fortune, equally met
blue skies or gray, they
were destined to find
the end
that they deserved

Nowadays
there’s little regard
for those faint flickers of shadows and light
glimpses of worlds and secret lives
old-fashioned, they say
but the charms of yesteryear
still magical
enchantment to me
