Coming of age, Orion struggles with the choice every Circadian must make: day or night? |
The Night Mechanic is a Young Adult novel that takes place in the not-so-distant future, when the population of major cities has soared and the urban infrastructure, the environment, and people's well-being and comfort are all under great stress. Orion lives in the city of Circadia, where, in an attempt to decrease the effects of overcrowding, the city government has mandated that everyone must choose whether to become a Day Person or a Night Person upon turning 14. This separates the city's population into two groups, or chronotypes, who live their lives in shifts. Orion just turned 14, and he has no idea which chronotype to choose. The story follows his quest to make the biggest decision of his life so far. Along the way, he meets many people who offer him advice, including Huck the night mechanic, who appears to be the perfect role model for building the kind of life Orion can see himself living. However, as Orion gets to know his hero for who he really is, and as he delays his chronotype decision to the point of criminality, he starts to realize that the only person who can make the big decision is himself.
