That's a good way to look at it. The most important thing is finding happiness in helping others and yourself. By helping other writers feel good, you probably improve your own skills, or that's the way I see it anyway.

I totally agree with you on fear being a huge obstacle for beginners. I think that's the same for any topic. It's hard to get people to move past that initial fear.
