1. The house was quiet, eerily quiet, but then what would you expect at 4 AM. He looked around one last time, checking to see if he had forgot anything. His wife was asleep in their bed, a small smile on her face, the telltale trace of a pleasant dream. He resisted the urge to kiss her good-bye, afraid that he might wake her. In the next room slept the twins. He had kissed each of them on their foreheads. He whispered a farewell to them as the tears traced paths down his cheeks. Silently he crept down the steps and out the door. With one last look at his house he stepped into…

2. A small dimple on the water told him where the feeding trout was. He had stalked this fish and now it was within casting distance. Slowly, he rose to his knees and began to plan his cast. He heard a noise from across the stream. Looking, he watched in amazement as a young boy cast his worm and bobber laden line right to where the trout had last risen for a fly. Some days, he thought, it just doesn’t pay to go fishing.

3. “Mary? Are you home, Mary?” There was no answer. The only sound was constant gurgle of the water in the aquarium. On the table was a note. As she read it, the color drained from Lily’s face.

4. Stepping through the portal made his body feel kind of tingly. It always had, ever since the first time. It wasn’t an unpleasant feeling. Yet, it reminded him that he was doing something few would ever get the chance to experience. He heard the familiar buzzing in his ears and then the flash of light that told him he was on his way. A second later he stood on a planet half a galaxy away. Stepping clear he glanced back at the portal and smiled. Last time, old buddy, he thought. Last time. This time I’m not going back.
