I'm saving the romance/love stories genre for next week, because this is something that came up for me the other day and I want to hear opinions about it. I know the two aren't defined the same - Slipstream and Magic Realism, but...I think they both have a similar problem - they're frequently defined as being exclusively subgenres of either fanatsy or science fiction when they're aren't neccesarily. I think they both fall into the speculative fiction category, but beyond that... how do you define each of them? Are they their own genre, are they just sub-genre's? Is slipstream a style of writing - a feeling - or does it have a more specific definition? Is grouping magical realism with fantasy doing it a disservice or is it an appropriate coupling? Do you read it? Write it? Hate it? Love it? (It being either or both genres) And of course - anything else the topics bring to mind. For instance, I'm a huge fan of magical realism - Neil Gaimen (except for the way he ends his novels) is one of my favorite authors, and someone I draw inspiration from. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
