Dogs At The Perimeter
I just finished this 2011 Madeleine Thien novel. She's an Asian-Canadian and the story is told from the point of view of a Cambodian expatriat, a refugee from 'the killing fields'.

This is an abstract and lyrical yet powerful and compelling story. If you grew up in the 60's and 70's like I did, you saw snippets of information but never really tuned in to what was happening. I think most of the rest of the world was oblivious to the Cambodian horrors of the mid-70's. Apparently very little ahs been written about this time, very few if any other novels. This alone majes it a worthy, important read, yet literary-wise, it is also a must. Her style of prose and story telling is unique. You may want to give it up early, but I highly recommend you read it through. It is short. Read it like a long poem.
