Hi Pristina,Welcome back.
You are right of course. People sometimes do it to escape persecution.
This also means that,
1. persecution can be done in the name of religion ( a group against another or individuals),
2.people can feel persecuted by their religion , and finally,
3. people may feel persecuted because of other factors, and blame it on their religions.

What it does not show , is any kind of superiority of one faith over another.Complex, but clearly points to the social and political aspects of religion.
But sometimes , as in the 60's counterculture movement, there is genuine dissatisfaction, and these are times, perhaps ,when new religions are formed. In the wider sense of the term -- Ligum , to bind. By this definition, Marxism is a religion and so is Hippiedom. Therein lies the germ of creation of sects, cults denominations and further subdivisions. And a hierarchy and leadership fills the void , good and evil together.
