Thank you to Elfin Dragon-finally published  for her assistance with this prompt. -| The Prompt |- It was a much smaller group that gathered this time, waiting for the next set of instructions and the next task. The Elven King was nowhere to be seen. Eventually an elf in high ranking livery stepped forward to speak. "The King sends his thanks for obtaining a live dragon-wolf, and believes that those of you who have proven so resourceful thus far will find the next task to be a worthy challenge." The elf eyed the remaining contenders, and glared at one who dared give him a 'hurry up and get on with it' gesture. "We have been advised that there is a key required to unlock the spell that has imprisoned Gulon in the warhammer. It is located in or around the Dark Lake." Gasps of surprise came from those standing nearby, although none of the contenders flinched. "We do not know what form the key takes, but we have been advised that you will know it when you see it." "Wait, so we're looking for something, but we don't know what we're looking for?" asked one of the contenders incredulously. "Indeed," agreed the elf. "It is a magical item, and we understand that when you see it, you will know without doubt that you have the right key. More than that, I cannot tell you." "Cannot, or will not?" came the bold question. "Cannot. I'm afraid you are on your own. We merely know that the key is in or near the Dark Lake. The Elven King wishes you all luck in your endeavours." "Wait, one more question!" The elf raised an eyebrow in question. "Is there just a single key? So whoever completes this task receives the vial of Elixir?" "At this time your task is not to return the key to us, merely to find it. The first two contenders to find it will be given instructions on where to take the key." -| Information |- The Dark Lake is at the center of the Darklands, and it is believed that all the Darkness emanates from there. Those who have seen the lake, and there are very few, tell that the waters are void of life. It is believed that the waters can suck the soul from anyone who drinks or bathes in the water. The only plant and animal life forms that exist in the immediate surroundings of the Lake are imbued with a dark magic and will resent your intrusion. You may take your dragon-wolf with you if it has been tamed and/or is obedient. The key may take any form you wish, be creative. Your story should end with you finding the key. You should submit a story (up to 5,000 words but there is no minimum word count). Your story must include both your character(s) and the character(s) of your partner in some way. Your story must explain how your character(s) achieve the task they have been given (locating the key). The task must be completed within the story you submit. You will receive another part of the prompt each round.
