I have an idea for a story. It has two parallel threads that eventually converge. But I cannot tell if it is a short story of around 5000 words, or it is a novel length piece. Or perhaps that it is two short stories set in the same world.
I guess it can be whatever length I choose it to be and that when I start planning it will become clearer what length I need it to be to achieve what I want. But my question is whether you have a gut instinct about how long your stories are going to be before you plan.
I write short stories differently to longer works (granted, I have yet to complete a novel) so knowing from the start would change how I work on the story.
