In the create/edit page of an item, you can see these access restriction menu selections besides the default of Make Public:
Keep Private, for my eyes only! = no one but you can see the item -- this is used for drafts, saving partly written work until it can be finished, or for archiving something you no longer want feedback on, but don't want to delete yet.
Registered Users and higher only = only members of the site who are logged in can see the item. This is useful for items you want to be read, but aren't necessarily looking for feedback for, since User members usually don't review.
Registered Authors and higher only = only members of the site who have items in their port and who are logged in can see the item. This is useful for when you are more concerned about getting feedback than about just being read.
