Friends and family can always be relied upon to bolster your ego and confidence. They will also feel obliged to lie to you if they think you fall short.

If we want to improve, we need someone who can be both brutally honest about our work and be able to tell us what we're doing wrong. In other words, someone who knows what they're talking about and doesn't pull their punches.
