Self Publishing

I hear so many negative comments in my circle of family & friends about going the road of " Self Publishing." In my head, I could spend years writing stories, and having them rejected. However, if I complete a book that I truly believe in then go the road of self publishing it will be out there and available much sooner.
Are many of you self publishing and what kind of money you think I should have available to start this off right?
Did I say I never had anything published before, and I am new to this site - - recommended by my sister actually.
