That's good advice, Zen, thank you. In many other aspects of my life (especially at work, where I head an Improvement Team staffed with project managers) I'm much better at planning, so it's not a completely alien concept to me.
That said, I head the team for a reason, because I'm better at seeing the strategic big-picture and less fired up by the detailed nitty-gritty stuff.
I'm going to try something approaching your method and see if it works for me. If necessary I can then dial back to a place further down the spectrum and find a process that I can feel comfortable with over the long term.
