I think that you've made some crucial points here.
1. It doesn't stifle creativity. Rather it sets it free
2. Not wasting thousands of words (and time) allows you to experiment with the storyline
3. You can see in an overview whether your story has problems before you begin writing

I've recently read Lisa Cron's book, Story Genius, which explains how, using the psychology that hooks readers into a story, you can ignore story structure entirely. It also allows you to make structures more flexible, if ignoring structure troubles you.
