Perhaps instead of thinking in terms of words, you should think in terms of scenes - like one or two each day. That way you'll see rapid progress.
It's also perfectly acceptable to have scenes with chiefly dialogue and little exposition - after all, dialogue is usually where the story is in such scenes. When you go through the editing process you can flesh them out a bit more.
