Whether you self publish or go the traditional route, you are th eperson who is going to have to expend most effort trying to sell the story. It's not the agent's job - their task is to represent you to the publishers and negotiate a good contract for you. The publishers job is publishing, not selling.
Of course, they both want the book to do well, and will usually do things to assist (newletters etc) but on the whole, the person with the biggest vested interest in the book selling well is you. You need to start networking, meeting and getting to know other people. Whatever genre your new story is - find a group that gobbles it up, because they're your potential audience. Social media is one of the easiest places to network, and has a long reach.
