When it comes to how we approach the story, everyone is going to have a different approach. I have done some character and world building to a degree and always plan to do more. I think about the novels for a long time before writing them, but in the end often just write. I managed 180,000 words on a fantasy novel with magic system yet did no world building beforehand. Prefer the seat of the pants, write it then develop more later as rewrite and edit.
