Please help me understand how 'although' is subordinating

Any help is appreciated.

The word 'although' is a subordinating conjunction. Which means it connects an independent clause with a dependent clause. Consider this sentence:

Although we arrived on time, the bus left without us.

“We arrived on time.” Looks like an independent clause, because it expresses a complete thought.

“The bus left without us.” Looks like an independent clause, because it expresses a complete thought.

So, to me, 'although' looks like a coordinating conjunction. Connecting two independent clauses. Could someone help me reconcile this? What am I missing?

Note: I found this sentence on a website explaining subordinating conjunctions.
