You can't use the cover image he was using unless he transfers ownership of that image to you also, or sets that image to shareable.

To clear the old information, edit the item and change the cover to a Stock cover image and save the edit. Then you should be able to delete the cover altogether, and save that edit. And then you can add a new cover. See the tutorial in Covers from Writing.Com 101  for details.

Once you've cleared the cover error, you should be able to change the access restrictions on an edit.
