For me in Chrome, the new window box next to an email listed in the Inbox, and next to links within an email works normally, opening a new tab with the new page load. (And the right click menu on the link opens the menu with all options [new tab, new window, etc.], which also works normally.)

So maybe on Firefox, or maybe it would help to clear your browser cache.
