So far as i'm aware, it's all alternative pre-history. To create some exciting fiction, i think you just need a "Instead of that, THIS happened."

So, instead of evolving into ominivours, humans evolved into autovours. om nom nom nom nom nom.

Instead of the appendix becoming vestigial, it became prehensile. From an inny to an outty!

Maybe the fertile crescent gets sprayed by some cosmic equivalent of DDT and humanity has to develop without that agricultural revolution.

I think there's plenty of room for a good story, as northern suggested so long as we can relate to the problems. That said, i acknowledge the possibility that some of my suggestions could be unhelpful.
