Try it. If you write the backstory and it doesn't fit in well or seems unnecessary, you can always take it out later. Nothing says you have to use everything you write in a story. That is what editing and rewrites are for anyways. Write whatever you think might be needed and trim things down during the revision process. Well, you have to write every single thing possible as the story might never end but you can write any scene you might want and decide later if it's necessary.
