The Trash folder in email is for trash = email to be thrown away. Which is what the site does with what you put there. It isn't archived.

If it isn't in your Inbox folder, you might check your SentMail folder to see if you replied to that email, and the information you want is in the copied area of the reply.

Other than that, check whether you moved it to a user-created folder by clicking on the label of the Folders menu instead of the down arrow to open the list of folders.

Also note that you need to be in the folder you want to search, or specify that folder in the search bar settings, for the search function to work properly.
