in 1951 Philip is the town junk man, he speaks of his days with the band (1937).
However, not everything Philip tells the boy is true.

I was thinking of making one chapter on Philip, one week it would be with the band in 1937.
It would be the week where they cut him loose because of a drug addiction issue.

Bobby is the main character - it is his POV He really becomes more than just friends with Philip.
He looks to Philip as the father he no longer has. Philip looks to the boy as something missing in his life.

His parents got divorced and his father went off to Korea (not in the story though).

Maybe I should just add an extra chapter at the end, Philip's Back Story, for any readers that "Want To Know."
