Starling, Dawn Embers gave you a well thought out response, and I would like to add my two cents.

I would NOT ask a judge why you placed a certain way. That isn't for you to know because it involves that judge's opinion of not only your piece but the other pieces involved in the contest.

If you truly want to know how to improve your piece, you could ask for a review of it, assuming you didn't already get one from the judge of the contest. Some judges include reviews, some do not, and that is completely up to their discretion if they are the contest owner. If they agree to send you a review, it may give you some insight on how they viewed your piece (but it will not tell you why another piece placed above yours).

Try also reading the other pieces entered in the contest, if you haven't already done so. This may also give you some insight you weren't expecting.
