This is called Past Continuous tense.where the reference is in the past but verbs are referred to in present.
Examples:
I was driving.
As I was driving, I saw an accident.
Driving back to my house, I saw an accident.
As far as I know (I could be wrong) these are all examples of Past Continuous. I use it in my writing all the time. It's used to indicate one action is continuing before and after another action takes place.
Past tenses:
Past Simple: I drove.
Past Continuous: I was driving.
Past Perfect: I had driven.
Past perfect continuous: I had been driving.
