Get Out was close, but I saw where it was going very quickly.
The first Saw film was a little gore-heavy, but ingenious in set-up.
Cloverfield was eerie, playing with the kaiju format through found footage/personal footage methodology.
I really wanted to like Midsommar, but I've seen the original Wicker Man (let's not talk about the Cage version) and this was just a Swedish version of that
Devil works for me, though slightly improbable and it is obvious.
But none of these are as perfect or terror inducing as, say the original The Exorcist, the original Friday the 13th, the original Evil Dead, An American Werewolf In London (best horror-comedy ever), and so on.
