Re: Re: Reviewing lyrics

I would have to review them as pure poetry, or else hear them performed.

Lyrics without music are no different than poetry.

I struggled with this for a long time. At first I collected my works together and and called them Lyric Groups. Gradually, I shifted the name to Lyric-Poems. Most had an epic quality, and many no longer fit into the common verse-chorus-bridge patterns. Eventually, I gave up on the word Lyric entirely, and now I just call them poetry.

Doesn't stop each and every one from having a melody line, and doesn't stop the hours of music composed for some of them.

If you look in my port, you'll see poetry, but nothing labelled as lyrics. And yet "Invalid Item ("Recursion", in case it goes away someday) was composed vocal-line first by singing it over and over while I drove to work. "Invalid Item ("Images of Death") had its debut on Mothers Day (1988 or 1989?), performed by an extremely talented vocalist I used to work with and me on classical guitar.

If, someday, my works grace the liner notes of a muscial release, I might refer to them as lyrics! =)

Cheers!
