There is a great sadness in this short story because it holds an inherant truth in the way many seniors are cast aside today. Writing is smooth and rich with detail of the couple's life,[past and present] in few words. The narrative inner dialogue moves the story forward without overwhelming or breaking reader involvement. One gets a very good feeling of this couple's devotion and lifestyle throughout. Just two small suggestions I noted while reading;
tromp [across] rutted ground [ added word in brackets smooths flow I felt]
renting [ ripping?] his clothes [ think you have a typo in renting.]
A sad, but memorable read that I would definately recommend to others.
