Overall Impression Wow. I'm struggling to think of words to express my reaction. Overwhelmed, saddened, joyful? I've never read a story about a butterfly that through the author's gift of writing came alive and spoke to all my senses. All I wanted to do was sit down and cry. I had to walk away and think this through before returning to the review. Powerful writing, that's for sure. Plot/Setting/Characters Because the story was told from a husband's POV the feelings evoked were stronger. Such compassion is more likely to be seen in females. I have a few guy friends capable of reacting like this, but it's unusual. The opening scene was vivid, but when the husband caught sight of the jar my heart stopped along with his. What came next was painful to read. I wanted to race toward the conclusion, and at the same time slow down and absorb every word. Your word choices added to the attraction. Nothing was repeated, and the verbs and adjectives were strong. Only one place gave me pause. The jar jumped out at me— This interrupted the flow because although I understood what you meant, all I could see was a jar flying through the air. This might be an instance where a filtering words is actually need. "The appearance of—" I was upset when he put the butterfly away in a book, imagining the wings being smashed. I wondered if his "spontaneous" visit to the butterfly exhibit spurred his further actions. Closing thoughts My son is close to your age and would react much the same way. I'm still paralyzed by the beauty in these words, and there's not much more I can say. My review has been submitted for consideration in "Good Deeds Get CASH!" .
