Shake, Rattle, and Roll [ASR] Medication: the single most important but most difficult treatment for those with bipolar. |
Hello, maria_sitzman. My name is Charlie and I'm happy to be reviewing your piece, "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" that I found on the "Read a Newbie" page. Please keep in mind that the following is just the opinion of one reader. I am not a professional and you know your work better than anyone else. If you find something helpful here, use it. If you don't, feel free to disregard this completely. First Impressions The title is great and caught my attention. I like it because it kind of has a double meaning. The shaking that you get from taking the medication and the "shake, rattle, and roll" from a manic episode. I don't have bipolar disorder, though someone very close to me does. I can relate to the effects of various medications. I remember the first time I took Xanax, which I was prescribed, and I couldn't lift my head off the couch. It felt like there was a brick inside of it. Subject Matter This is basically a personal essay about the positive and negative effects of medication used to treat bipolar disorder. It has a positive message that people with mental disorders need to hear. Even though it's hard to continue with medications that have negative side effects, the positive effects are better than living your life in a constant state of mood swings, depression, anxiety, or whatever else it may be that you're going through. Descriptions and Readability The way that you spoke felt personal, like talking to a friend about an experience you've gone through. You did a good job of providing examples that adequately display the ups and downs that one goes through while trying to get on the right medications and dealing with the side effects of them. I feel like even someone who doesn't have experience in this area will understand what you've been through and continue to go through. What Worked One of my favorite parts of this piece was when you talked about the side effects of Lamictal/Lamotrigine. You talk about the rash that you can get if you does up too quickly and how it could be life threatening. I can't even begin to tell you how much I relate to the next part where you talk about how you got a little bit of poison ivy on your foot and had a whole night of anxiety to look forward to. It's just the perfect description of the things that trigger anxiety. Could Use Work I've searched and searched, but I can't really find any issues here that need to be addressed. Sorry. Final Thoughts Overall, I think this is an accurate description of the struggle people go through when being medicated for mental disorders. I think a lot of people think, "Oh, you're anxious/depressed. Just go on medication." It isn't that simple. There's also the struggle of finding the right medication that works with your mind/body and you still have to deal with the negative side effects. It ends up being worth it, but it's not an easy trip. Thanks again for sharing!
