You have one of the most beautiful stories penned here. I love the philosophy of making the best of the present and fear not the future. Both go down well with me. They are the keys that hold the secret of happiness.
The narration of what was, is and will be, is impressive and heartening. The parenthood full of energy and activity and then the mature years when things calm down and a strange quiet rules the house are pictures of reality. I am sure this is true of most of the families all over the world.

The bits of contemplation hold a mirror to our doubts and fears.
"No shouting, no arguing about who gets the shower first--or last.
I like life like this. It's peaceful. Calm even."
You showed that's not all about life. others matter. They matter more than our single selves.

The formatting shows the mental pauses, continuation and traveling back in time. Those gaps and short sentences fit in well with the story.
