The following are only my personal opinions. Ultimately, you and only you can decide what works best for your item.

I was really looking forward to reading how you would include the horses in the story and it's quite an amazing sotry! This story reminded me of a movie called The Golden Compass in which when a person's pet or animal, he dies too.

I loved the fantasy aspect of the story abd in my opinion, this story had two thibgs or theme. First was the child learning the lesson of obeying their elders and secondly, the wish of every mother. Which mother doesn't want to hear that she is the best mom in the entire world? It also reflrcts your character in the story. Maybe you top were not too good with children but hearing them say you are the best must be an awesome feeling! *Smile*

I had a few suggestions for your story.
