I have enjoyed this story with a historical background, narrated in first person.
Your character is highly impressive. He is simple in bearing but he seems aware of how to deal with unexpected situations. The moment of his meeting with the President is truly a worthy fictional situation. Dame luck was with him on that momentous day.
I also enjoyed the flow of your language and style. It is smooth and spontaneous.
Dialog lent vitality to the story.
The exchange of conversation between various characters reflected their minds and the setting in which they worked.

This is one story I would like to learn from regarding crafting, setting and error-free narrative style.
