Some things I Like:

The voice here is very strong and distinct. That is very helpful for a character piece!

Observations & Suggestions:

To be honest, when I first read 'That's the thing about slavery', I wanted to just close the story. A slave is an interesting character, but I have read too many fictional accounts of slavery in the U.S. south to want to read another one... I was pleased that it wasn't the case here. I might consider adding some modern detail earlier in the story to signal people that this isn't a period piece.

It was also nice that it never devolved into griping about the cruelty of the 'slavers'. If someone is so traumatized that they don't even remember their name, that implies horrors greater than you could have written anyway.

The character is pretty strong in general, but mostly, her voice is what carries the story.
