Some things I Like:

Cute story, love. I had no doubt whatsoever that it was an animal rather than a human, but it was still a pretty fun read.

Observations & Suggestions:

So... I knew it was going to be animals of some sort when you first mentioned the straw and urine. Everything after that reinforced the idea. I was relatively sure it was going to be a horse though... being put "out to pasture", you know. I imagine that it was supposed to be a little more surprising, so that's something to think about. It did seem like it went on for a very long time after I already figured out the ending. The animal changed, but it amounted to the same thing, which hindered my enjoyment somewhat.

Watch the personification. A turkey fell to its "knees"? Changing their anatomy might be going a bit too far.

As far as characters go, I think you did a good job with Old Jack. Poor fellow. For the contest, I think it is a nice piece that follows the prompt well and is not just the same old thing. I appreciate what you were going for here.
