My heart felt your pain and my mind had a glimpse into your reality. Alcoholism destroys families, friendships and jeopardizes careers. You are a very wise youth for making a positive choice not to go down the road of your father.

I think you are admirable for trying to keep anything with an alcohol base out of your diet. My heart broke when you were told at a dinner table that the meat sauce had alcohol in it, because of the terrible way it made YOU feel. No alcohol, is not always an easy choice, we do have extracts that flavor pastries, which have an alcohol base. It is a miniscule amount, of course, but nevertheless there. However, I don't think that one is being exposed to alcoholic tendencies by enjoying a cupcake or cookies. It is a frame of mind and personal knowledge that helps you to not be pulled into the world of alcoholism. Being exposed to a family member who has that disease, is tough for the whole family. There is help available, even to the family members of the alcoholic. (Al-anon) So, you do not have to walk this path alone.
