*CakeB* HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary Reviews*CakeP*

There is something rather cruel in this programming and the way the narrator and her friends try to overcome it, knowing that they will never succeed but at the same time being unable to give up. It is hard to see the advantages - of course, at first glance it seems like a good idea to ensure that everyone is aware of their own and others' imperfections because it seems to teach tolerance, to a point. But the continuous struggle to overcome the adversity without any real hope of success, and worse, with the knowledge that success would be punished, puts a different spin on this programming that leaves the readers wondering about the real purpose.

You don't say who the narrator and his friends are and although it is clear that they are not human, they certainly show human traits in their feelings, friendships and their approach to overcoming adversity. It also isn't clear who the programmers are who exert such cruel punishments to penalise the machines for their responses to their own programming. But although the setting is a little vague, it doesn't take away from the tale itself and I could easily follow the characters' difficulties.

The story is well written and the few descriptions are sufficient to give the readers a good image of the scene. I was wondering if this was part of a longer story because it seemed that the scope for expanding it was there. The last paragraph added some depth to the tale; until then, it was a story about a friendship that had a slight sci-fi overtone but the ending rounded the story off very well as it explained a little about the background and how bleak the characters' situation really was, which you had previously hinted at. I thought it worked well and was quite a powerful way to end the story.
