Hello Oldwarrior,

my name is Tiggy and I am reviewing your story as a judge for "What a Character! : Official WDC Contest. Thanks for entering! Please bear in mind that my comments and suggestions are only my opinion. Other reviewers might see it differently.

I couldn’t help but applaud the main character as he explained his beliefs. He did a great job and he could back up his ideas and where they came from, whereas the priest only seemed interested in picking holes in George’s theories. When that didn’t work, he went back to the old, “I’m right and you’re wrong” line without being very constructive. George stayed calm when the priest lost his temper, although it seemed that George had far more reason to lose it. He was an interesting character, well rounded and with a lot of conviction. His reasons for the way he chose to live his life were quite poignant and added some depth to his beliefs.

I liked the setting you chose for this tale. The basis was George explaining his belief, but the way you structured it didn’t make it read like merely a justification; you weaved enough story around it by telling the readers a bit about his background and his reasoning as well as his current situation. The dialogue was excellent and believable and it was easy to imagine the argument between the two men. The other marines piped up occasionally, and again this was nicely done and also added a bit of humour. Perhaps I would have liked a bit more description in places to picture the scene a little better, although you included some descriptions at the beginning and the setting itself gave the readers an idea what the place would have been like.

The story was well written – I may have spotted a couple of minor errors, but nothing big – and it was easy to follow the main character’s thoughts and his explanations. I was a little confused about the priest at one point; when he was hiding a smile, I thought for a moment that he was enjoying the conversation, but George took offense when he saw it and I realised that it was most likely a sneer rather than a friendly smile.

Overall, I thought this was nicely done. You used the prompt well to come up with an interesting tale.
