my name is Tiggy and I am reviewing your story as a judge for "What a Character! : Official WDC Contest" . Thanks for entering! Please bear in mind that my comments and suggestions are only my opinion. Other reviewers might see it differently.


The first thing that struck me about this story was the tone. There was something about it that made the narrator very likeable and easy to relate to. She told her story in a matter-of-fact way without being melodramatic. Something bad had happened to her but she didn’t make excuses for how that had affected her life. Interesting that this wasn’t a story of how she found her faith, or found it again, but how she lost it and actually did her best to keep it that way.

There was enough of a conflict there for the narrator to get the readers interested in her story. Her friend was an intriguing character; he had his own beliefs which were the opposite of hers, and he mentioned his concerns, but he didn’t preach, neither about her activities nor her lack of belief. In return, the narrator felt comfortable letting him help her.

I liked how you let the readers get to know the main character before you filled in the background. The dialogue sounded very natural and it was easy to imagine the conversation. There didn’t seem to be much in the way of description but I’m not sure if it was necessary. The readers learned enough about the character’s life to have an idea about the setting anyway and I felt you were ‘showing’ me the story through her emotions, or in places the lack of them.

The story was well written – I noticed one sentence that seemed a little awkward and I had to read it a couple of times to ‘get it’ but apart from that, it flowed very well and I didn’t spot any errors. Overall, I thought the narrator’s unique voice was excellent and it made the story a great read.
