Hello Kanish ~ we got this!,

my name is Tiggy and I am reviewing your story as a judge for "Short Shots: Official WDC Contest. Thanks for entering! Please bear in mind that my comments and suggestions are only my opinion. Other reviewers might see it differently.

As I was reading, I was wondering how the story related to the image prompt, until I got to the end. I have to admit, it didn’t seem like the strongest connection, but I could see how the picture inspired the story. The main element of this story was the characters, both the ones that were alive and the ones they were talking about, the ones that were dead. The readers learned quite a lot about them all. The two that were having the conversation let their emotions come across quite clearly, about the two dead people and also about their sense of justice and what they perceived as being unfair. Especially Sally’s feelings on the subject were very clear.

The plot was unusual and quite intriguing, and it took me a moment to figure out what was going on. Once I ‘got it’ I thought the structure worked very well, but it will take a patient reader to stick with it and work it all out. It was only half-way through the story that it partly fell into place, for me, and only at the end did I really understand what the first part had been all about and what the importance of the conversation in the middle part was. That’s not really a criticism, more an observation. Like I said, when it all started to make sense I thought it was quite clever.

The dialogue in the middle part and the end was well done and it was easy to understand the characters’ reactions and the way they discussed their issues. In the beginning part, which I personally found quite gruesome, I struggled a bit more, and it wasn’t clear who was speaking and really, what they were saying, until later on.

I would have liked a bit more description, especially at the end when the scene was ‘beautiful’ but you didn’t really show the readers enough details to explain why that was. But you made up for it with the lovely ending which was a well-deserved reward for the man. The story was very polished and I didn’t notice any errors, and I thought the way you used the different fonts to show the different speakers was quite neat. Overall, despite the beginning which made a few shivers run down my spine, it was a good read.
