I absolutely loved this story, you nailed the feel of place and time well.
A time before vaccines and diseases like diphtheria took lives, young and old.
Wasn’t sure if it was a child or his wife that died, but it didn’t matter.
The sadness and despair that Chandler displayed was evident, a typical male reaction to a personal tragedy, that of anger and an unwillingness to share his pain.

I liked the references that lightened the story such as the lucky turkey and the young sons catching the school bus.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful but sad tale.
