*BalloonR* Welcome to WDC from "Newbie Welcome Wagon! *BalloonR*

Greetings, NateMn24!
I totally agree with this piece, and you’re correct by using some of those examples of why they shouldn’t be allowed free roam on the internet. My own daughter has 3 boys, and she didn’t allow them to have a Facebook page until they were 13.
But the main reason they shouldn’t be allowed free roam on the Net is because it’s quickly eroding not only their social skills, but it’s also ruining their health. There’s a serious obesity problem in this country right now, and allowing kids to sit behind a screen all day without getting any physical activity is the number cause of this. It’s a proven fact.
When I was kid growing up, we didn’t have technology like this. The Net didn’t appear until the mid 90’s, and by then I was in my mid 20’s. When I grew up I spent my time after school playing with my friends outside. Hell, it was practically demanded of us just to get us out of our parent’s hair!
And now we have a new problem: cell phones. I just saw a program on TV where little kids (I’m talking 2 year olds up to 6 year olds here) trying to get their parent’s attention while they texted on their phones, completely ignoring their children’s pleas to play with them! It broke my heart to see a 3 year old little boy saying, “Mommy, mommy, mommy,” while he held a ball up to her, and she acted like he wasn’t even there!
But as for the internet, that’s just as bad.
Well said, Nate! My only suggestion for this piece would be to use more examples and go into detail why this is hurting our children.
And as for Facebook, they said it would bring us closer. WRONG! It’s made us grow apart. People don’t write letters any more, or have face to face contact because they can just sit on their butts and punch buttons all day. It used to be so different, and I seriously fear that technology will destroy the social values we once held so dearly!
I could probably write a whole book on this subject, but I need to get back on the internet right now to ‘talk’ to my Facebook pals! *Laugh*
By the way, I used to say I’d never get hooked on the internet, or even computers, for that matter. Sadly, I did wind up getting hooked. But I’ve severely cut down on it for the reasons I’ve pointed out!
Kee ponw ritin gon, Nate, and welcome to WdC! If you like to write, then you’re going to love it here!
