I saw your story on the Please Review page. First of all, wonderful story. I'm not really going to focus on all the things you did super well on, but the things you can make better.

Consider removing or changing the part about lakes not getting tides. It is not important to the idea of the story. I understand you wrote it for character development, but it seems cheesy to me and you already have plenty of character development. "Tell the moon to stop". Even at 6, this girl knows very well that the moon won't stop just because her dad tells it to do so. I see this often in stories with young children, and am always put off by it. Maybe that's just me. I would suggest asking other people specifically about that section.
"whassa-matta, baby?" this makes the mom sound black, and i don't think that's what you were going for? Something I do when writing dialogue is saying it out loud to see if it flows well, sounds like realistic speech, and fits my vision for the character. When the dad yells "Seaweed!" to his wife. Would a real person actually talk like that?
"with a long-suffering sigh" There is a lot of sighing in this story, when in reality they are having a good time. I get what you are going for, but think you might be over-doing it a little.
"Her mother reached for the Igloo cooler and retrieved a can of soda and two triangles of cheese sandwich in a plastic baggie. She started to eat the sandwich slowly while her father" Replace 'she' with 'Peg'. At first it sounds like the mother is eating the sandwich.
"I'm mean big things" Should be, "I mean big things"

Awesome story. The inspiration from the quote is made very clear at the end and you did a good job structuring the story so it leads up to that point. I was super nit-picky, and gave you my own opinion which might be completely wrong, so make sure to take everyone's (including your own!) thoughts into consideration when revising your story. I hope you do well in the contest.
