Greetings, Neil!
I like this. Mainly because it speaks of current events on this planet regarding our own ultimate demise, and sadly it will likely be of our own making!
There's a lot of irony in this piece. I don't know if there will be any 'martyrs', per se, but we've created our own problems with global warming and pollution, so to think that some extraterrestrial bacteria or virus could infect our planet from the ISS isn't a big stretch of the imagination!
I just wonder what's going to happen when my grandchildren reach my age! And I'm 54, just a few months younger than you are!
The spelling and telling were good, but you have this all bunched up. It needs to be broken up into more paragraphs. For instance, you should always start a new paragraph when a new speaker talks (each speaker gets their own paragh). And you should also probably double space between the paragraphs to make it easier to read.
A couple of tiny niggles:
‘Dr Bradley(,) Charles' assistant...’
‘...then changing it's own molecular structure’ (its)
Otherwise, good job!

By the way, you couldn't be more correct when you say that you can't be a good writer without being a good reader! I've actually heard people on this site say that they don't need to read to be able to write! And after having what they wrote, they proved themselves to be idiots!
