Ahoy, Hullabaloo!
This isn't bad. I like how you kept us in suspense wondering what that letter was about (and we still are! *Bigsmile*), and you did a nice job with the prompt words. The spelling and grammar were also good, but the ending seemed a little anticlimactic.
But that's just my own humble opinion for what that's worth!
One suggestion:
'prepare myself (for) whatever it said.'
